Engine Options

Jeep Cherokee InteriorThree separate engine options are available in the 2019 Jeep Cherokee. Which one offers the right amount of performance and efficiency to match your lifestyle?

A 2.4L Tigershark® MultiAir® 2 comes standard on Latitude, Latitude Plus, and Limited FWD. It offers drivers 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. That's enough power to tow 2,000 pounds with the Jeep Cherokee when properly equipped. Plus, this efficient inline four-cylinder can get you an EPA-estimated 22 MPG city/31 MPG highway on FWD models.

Limited 4x4, Overland, and Trailhawk® trims come with a more powerful 3.2L Pentastar® V6. This engine is also available as an upgrade option on lower trim levels. It generates 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque. That extra power allows you to tow 4,500 pounds when properly equipped.

Want even more torque to help you maneuver tricky terrain? Opt for the 2.0L Turbo I-4, available on every model except Latitude. This newest addition to the Cherokee lineup offers 270 horsepower, similar to the V6. However, it also offers 295 lb-ft of torque. You also get the extra thrill of a turbo boost when you hit the gas.

Drivetrain Options

One of the great things about Jeep is its selection of capable drivetrain options. Most models are available in front-wheel drive, but 4x4 is where you'll really get the off-road experience you crave. Each of the three available systems builds off the last, so choose one that matches your level of adventure:

  • Jeep Active Drive I: Automatically switches to four-wheel drive when extra traction is needed, but features a rear axle disconnect to improve efficiency in normal driving conditions
  • Jeep Active Drive II: Adds a Low Mode for improved traction at low speeds, while Neutral Mode allows you to flat tow the Cherokee
  • Jeep Active Drive Lock: Adds a mechanical rear axle lock for more off-road capability, plus Rock Mode for extremely rough terrain

Choosing Your Jeep Cherokee Configuration

Jeep Cherokee ConfigurationsWhen it's time to build your perfect Jeep Cherokee, think about how you'll be using it and the features that matter most to you.

If you want the roominess and style of the Cherokee paired with an efficient powertrain, start with the Latitude Plus, Limited, or Overland trim level and front-wheel drive. Then, upgrade your engine to the 2.0L Turbo. This configuration will get you an EPA-estimated 23 MPG city/31 MPG highway.

More interested in taking those interior comforts off-road? The Trailhawk® was built to handle challenging conditions. It comes with the highly capable Jeep Active Drive Lock 4x4 system. Both the 2.0L Turbo and the 3.2L Pentastar® V6 will offer plenty of power for your journey, but you may want the extra torque offered with the former.
